Just as satellite dishes competed with cable decades ago for premium movie channel services, dishes are now back, offering satellite acces to the internet to compete with cable and DSL. In a practical sense, satellite Internet access isn’t so much of a competing technology as much as it is an alternative in areas where cable or DSL services are not available. Internet access via satellite is a somewhat pricey option at this time, though with downstream rates from 150-1,200 Kbps and upstream rates around 50-150 Kbps, available bandwidth is far greater than dialup connectivity.
Satellite Internet access operates via geostationary (fixed-position) satellites that beam microwaves from about 22,300 miles above the Earth’s equator to your dish antenna and transceiver (transmitter/receiver). Satellite Internet access is available in two forms: two-way and one-way.
A typical two-way satellite Internet connection allows for upstream and downstream transmissions via satellite. Here is an example of a typical two-way satellite data transmission:
1. Your transceiver (connected to your computer) passes the digital signal to your dish antenna, which beams the information to the satellite (transponder).
2. The transponder forwards/beams the digital signal to a network operations center (NOC) back on the ground.
3. The NOC forwards the data request on to the Internet via land-based infrastructure.
4. Data returning from the Internet follows the same process (in reverse) back to your computer.
In theory, this entire process takes only about half of a second, but in practice it takes longer, so this isn’t the method of choice for online gamers. (The time delays inherent in satellite communication can be somewhat distracting to online gainers.) A two-way setup provides always-on Internet connectivity that makes access convenient.
A one-way satellite transmission downstreams data from the transponder to your dish antenna but does not allow for transmitting data upstream in the same manner. One-way internet satellite access requires that you transmit upstream data through a dialup connection but only downstream data travels via satellite.
It is worth noting that because satellite Internet access operates off “lineof-sight” communication, transmissions are susceptible to heavy precipitation signal degradation (rain fade) and occasional solar interference. A variation of this technology called fixed wireless uses cell towers and has less latency but even more line-of-sight problems. But with the growth of the internet, and need of customers, satellite internet service is improving both in practicality and price.
So if DSL or cable or even dial up internet service is not an option for you, satellite internet service may be your ticket to net freedom.

With the growing popularity of satellite technology I had to ask myself is satellite television really cheaper then cable television. To be quite honest I was rather skeptical before I sat down and did the math.
There have been a lot of promotions with satellite television providers and they have been offering free direct TV systems. So I began to wonder why anyone would just give a product like that away for free. It just seemed rather odd to me. So I sat down and did a comparison for myself to see if satellite television is really cheaper then cable. I was very surprised that in the long run you do save a lot of money and also receive more channels.
However be careful about local channels, they might not be available for free in your area so that is something to check out before ordering. They have packages that include your local channels, which was an issue in the past when people ordered satellite cable. They would get it then find out that they had to pay extra for their local channels which made no sense. I took a look at the list where local channels are available and it’s pretty broad, so most people shouldn’t worry.
However the free equipment is just basic equipment. There is nothing wrong with that, but people who are looking for DVR, HDTV, or combination should know they would have to pay for their equipment. Depending on what you want it will average anywhere from $100.00 to $700.00 plus tax and shipping charges. In the long run it will work its self out because this is your equipment. When you have DVR or HDTV DVR equipment through cable you pay an extra monthly amount for that equipment which adds up in the long run and isn’t yours to keep if you cancel it. So even if you order the most expensive equipment it will have balanced its price out in a few years.
If you opt for the free equipment all you have to do is pay for shipping and handling which is pretty much the same cost you would pay for cable installation. There is a catch to signing up for the free satellite equipment offer. You must make a one-year commitment to the service. Which isn’t bad for those who definitely know satellite will work in the area they live in. Sometimes when people live in wooded areas do have trouble receiving satellite signals. That is something I would check into before I agreed to any annual commitment.
No matter what satellite package you chose would either save anywhere from $15.00 to $40.00 a month. Even if you chose the highest premium package available which is equivalent to the highest cable premium package you will still receive more channels for your money.
I started off not believing it, but satellite television offers are really more cost friendly. Sit down and do the math for yourself.

There are five parts to a satellite system which is also identified as a direct-to-viewer DTV satellite system: the source of programming; the broadcast hub; the satellite; the watcher’s satellite dish; and the receiver.

The satellite system programming sources are the channels or sometimes networks which choose to send programs by broadcasting the content. At the transmission center, the television production team gets notices from various programming sources and then proceeds to emit a message to the satellites located in Earth orbit in what is known as a geostationary path in space. A geostationary orbit is one in which the orbiting object remains in one position in respect to the person or object on the surface of the planetary body.

The component of the satellite system that picks up the signal from space and passes it on to the regular television located in the owner’s home is known as the satellite system receiver.

Together these five components make up the whole known as the satellite system. It is interesting to note that each signal sent goes into space twice, once from the programming source to the broadcast center and once from the broadcast center to the satellite in space. This all happens, however in the blink of an eye.

The satellite system in your home, while providing a wealth of programming in all types of format is not inexpensive. Literally thousands of programs are bouncing around in cyber space and we only hear of just a relative few.

With a good satellite system in place, you can receive all the programming choices you are likely to need or want. Satellite receivers used to be large, clunky devices, that most homeowners had to give up their entire backyards to enjoy. The prohibitive size and the frequency these creations failed to actually receive the signals desired combined to make satellite an option that only a few pursued. Nowadays, however, satellite receivers have changed a lot. From their size to their reliability levels, these devices have come a long way through the years.
While a satellite receiver will still be necessary to make most devices work, they are typically much more compact. Used for everything television and radio reception to portable phones and beyond, small receivers are the wave of now. This isn’t to say larger receivers aren’t still out there. Telephone receivers: Satellite telephone service is fast taking over where cellular left off. Offering users fairly reliable service from almost anywhere in the world, these phones are no larger than regular or even mobile phones. The receivers used in satellite phones are generally built into the mix, too, demonstrating just how far this technology has come in a short time.
While it used to be anyone who wanted a satellite receiver needed to be prepared to spend a long of cash on a monstrosity, that just isn’t the case anymore. As technology has moved forward, receivers have become smaller, more portable and much more reliable.

Many receivers have parental lock-out options, which is important for a family with small children, and some even have built-in digital video recorders, which is the new fad of allowing you to pause live television or record it onto a hard drive without the need of tapes or discs. TiVo is the most well known example of this new technology.
As long as a satellite is being used to send signals, receivers will be needed to catch them. This process of signals being sent and received is what allows for the quality television and radio that so many people enjoy.
